Saturday.... I went to see Elbert. Got to the common room and did not see him. An aide pointed him out to me. There the little stinker was, over in a corner, his chair arm pushed right up next to another chair arm and he is talking his head off to a very willing listener. Didn't talk much at home. You think it upset me? No way. He was alert, enjoying himself and communicating. That made me happy.

Good for you! There is a film out about this very thing. Away From Her (2007)
In Away From Her, Julie Christie was Oscar-nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal of Fiona, a woman with Alzheimer's who voluntarily enters a long-term care facility to avoid being a burden on Grant, her husband of 50 years. After a 30-day separation (recommended by the facility), Grant visits Fiona and finds that her memory of him has deteriorated and that she's developed a close friendship with another man in the facility. Grant must draw upon the pure love and respect he has for Fiona to choose what will ensure his wife's happiness in the face of the disease. Christie won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) for her performance in this movie.
Jenn, I saw that movie. You do what you can to insure that your loved one is happy and at peace. If that is finding friendship with others then be it. I thought they were really cute, sitting there side by side.
This reminds me of the judge Sandra Day O'Connor and her husband, John. I'm sure this happens more often than we'd think.
If this happens with David later on, I'll feel like you do. I'll be happy to see him happy.
This awful disease robs everyone of so much!!!.... but to see our loved one having a friendship, would be comforting.
Your love and attitude are such an inspiration.
Hi Latane
I have been away from my keboard more than I would like lately but I am glad to see that Elbert is finding new friends. I think it is cute! And you are right Latane. We do whatever it takes to ensure that they are happy and if it means new friends so be it! You are still my hero and always will be.
Love
Nancy
